Chapter Fifteen

Madelyn

“Is it cheesy?” Maxton asks, his hand on the small of my back.

It’s difficult to answer as I look around the planetarium. All the seats have been removed and white petals are scattered everywhere, catching the light of the stars which surround us, looking like miniature stars themselves. A glittering table and chairs sit in the middle, with a candle burning a white flame.

I lean against him, my skin tingling as he applies more pressure.

“Cheesy?”

I turn to him, my man with his silver hair catching the light. He’s wearing a shirt that hugs his muscled torso, his eyes wolfish and intense. But his lips are twisted into something between a frown and a smirk.

“I’ve never seen you nervous before,” I whisper, with a soft smile. “I guess I should be flattered.”

He grins, leans down, and kisses my forehead. “That’s not an answer.”

“I love it. It’s amazing. I didn’t even know they made food here.”

Maxton chuckles. “They don’t usually, but there’s a restaurant down the street and I’ve commandeered their services for the evening. We have menus, and we just have to text them and they’ll bring whatever we want.”

My cheeks glow, making me feel like I’m going to burst into tears for a crazy moment. “This is easily the loveliest thing anyone has ever done for me. Thank you.”

“You don’t need to thank me,” he growls. “Just you being here is thanks enough…”

Quickly his lips are suddenly on mine and I melt against him.

My body is so ready for his touch, I can’t even try to fight it. He groans as our mouths part and our tongues clash. My hands claw down his shoulders, across his back, feeling how strong he is, how ready to protect our family.

A voice hisses in the back of my mind, warning me to stop, reminding me we’re here to discuss what to do about dad.

But how can I think about dad at a time like this?

I must be the worst daughter in the world.

Maxton senses something is off, and the kiss comes to a natural end.

Taking my hand, he leads me to the center of the room, as the stars watch from all around us.

“This is like we’re half in the game, half in real life.”

I giggle as he pulls my seat out, even if nothing’s funny. There’s just so much fuzzy emotion bursting out of me. I have to let it out somehow.

Sitting down, Maxton tucks my chair in and then walks around to his side of the table. “That’s a good way to look at it. I didn’t think of that. But yeah, you’re right. It’s a good middle ground.”

“Do you find it easier in the game?” I ask. “Being with me, I mean.”

“No. I prefer being with you in real life. You’re so much more beautiful than your avatar. Your voice is sweeter.”

I shake my head.

“I’m serious.” He’s quick to retort.

“But it’s objectively not true. Let’s say Genevieve was real, this tall princess with perfect features, and the voice like an angel… would you say the same?”

He reaches across the table and takes my hand.
